Large Cardamom Symptoms & Management
×
Symptoms:
The affected plants produce a large number of dwarf shoots which do not bear any flowers. The leaves become small, lightly curled andpale green in colour.Plants are often stunted and give an appearance of phylldy of the flowering spikes.
Management:
Removeand destroy the diseased clumps and insect vector.
Replanting with disease free stocks.
Nurseries should be located in disease free areas.
Regular survey of the plantation to trace out diseased plants.
Do not raise nurseries in the vicinity of infected plantations.
Control vector (aphid) by application of Dimethoate-30 EC @ 3 ml/10 litre of water

Symptoms:
The mosaic streaks are found on the leaves. The symptom is more prominent on young emerged leaves where discrete pale green to yellow longitudinal strips running parallel to each other can be seen. The flowering is greatly reduced thereby reducing the yield with time.
Management:
Remove and destroy the diseased clumps and insect vector.
Replanting with disease free stocks.
Nurseries should be located in disease free areas.
Regular survey of the plantation to trace out diseased plants.
Do not raise nurseries in the vicinity of infected plantations.
Control vector (aphid) by application of Dimethoate-30 EC @ 3 ml/10 litre of water.

Symptoms:
Water-soaked lesions appear on the leaf margin or on the tips of the leaves which rapidlyenlarges, coalesce and cover the entire leaf lamina giving blighted appearance. The advancing lesions are blackish-brown in colour and margins have a yellow halo around it. The affected leaves become necrotic and dry. Leaf sheath covering the pseudo stem shows blackish-brown discolouration which progress down to the rhizome and gradually the pseudostem becomes brittle and breaks in the middle or at the collar region. Eventually, the affected clump dries up completely giving the entire plant a burnt appearance.
Management:
Proper shade management.
Field sanitation and nutrient management.
Spray Cu containing fungicides Like Blitox-50@ 4g/litre or Trichoderma @ 0.3 g/litre.
×
Symptoms:
Main symptom is falling of leaves and rotting of rhizomes and collarsintheclumps. This is followed by death of leaves and the falling of pseudostems.
Management:
Remove the affected shoots from the field.
Drench the soil with 1%Bordeaux mixture.
×
Symptoms:
The disease affects the leaves causing water soaked lesions which spread rapidly to cover the entire leaf blade. The diseased leaf rots and rotting may spread to the entire shoot.
Management:
Spray any copper fungicides @3g/litre water at 15 days interval starting from prior to outbreak of monsoon followed by sprays during the break of the monsoon.

Symptoms:
The adult are minute, dark brown insects with narrow and highly fringed wings. The nymphs are yellow and have several molts before becoming adults. The nymphs are yellow in colour and have several molts before becoming adult. The nymph and adults attack the growing buds and flowers. The infestation of capsule causes malformation, dwarfing and corky
Management:
a. Spray 875 ml of dimethoate 30EC or 1.0 litre of quinalphos 25EC in 250 litres of water/ha.
×
Symptoms:
The adult insect is brownish in colour with stripes and spots on elytra. The grubs cause damage by making tunnels into rhizomes and shoots.
Management:
a. Remove and destroy the attacked plants.
b. If the free grub population is more in the soil, drench the base of the clump with 1.25 litres of malathion 50EC or 1.25 kg of carbaryl 50WP in 625 litres of water/ha.
×
Symptoms:
The caterpillars feed on the leaves and tender portion of plants and defoliate them in case of heavy infestation. They are gregarious and congregate pupation.
Management:
a. Spray 500 ml of Malathion 50 EC or 500 WP in 250 litres of water/ha.
×
Symptoms:
The aphid feed on the leaf sheath and pseudostem. The insect causes little direct damage but is of considerable significance being vector of cardamom virus i.e. chirke and foorkey disease. The aphids are disseminated in cardamom plantation mostly by crawling from plants by the contact of foliage at the top and along the soil.
Management:
a. Spray 875 ml of dimethoate 30EC or 1 litre of Malathion 50EC in 250 litres of water/ha.
