Laipatta thrives best on well-drained sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. It is sensitive to high acidic soil. Optimum soil pH is 6.0-7.0.

Climate Requirement
Laipatta is cool season vegetable. It does not perform well in extreme hot climate. It requires a monthly average temperature of 15-18oC.

Uses
Laipatta or green mustered (Brassica Juncea) belongs to family cruciferae. Chromosomes number is 2n=20. Green leaves and tender stem is used as vegetable. . It is rich source of vitamins (A and B) and minerals (calcium and iron).

Sowing
It is propagated through seeds. Seeds may be direct sown in main field or seedling may be transplanted in main field. Best sowing time is October – November. Seedlings are transplanted with spacing of 25 x25 cm.

Manures & Fertilizers
Manures and fertilizer requirements in laipatta depend upon fertility of soil. In general 15-20 tones FYM and 90:60:60 kg NPK/ha has been recommended. FYM should be applied at the time of last ploughing and incorporated into soil thoroughly. Half quantity of nitrogen, full quantity of phosphorus and potash should be applied at the time of transplanting as basal dose. Remaining quantity of nitrogen is given in 2 split doses 30 and 60 days after sowing.

Harvesting
It takes about 30- 45 days after planting to first harvestdepending upon variety. It gives 2-3 cutting 10-12 days intervals. Laipatta gives yield 750-800 q/ha. About 25-30 leaves/plant is found.
