Kiwi require sites free from spring frost with a well-drained sandy loam soil and should be well exposed to sunlight.

Climate Requirement
Kiwi thrives well from 900 – 1800 m and were the climate is warm and humid. A satisfactory plant growth of kiwi wine takes place in areas which experience well distributed moderate to high rainfall and assured irrigation. It require 600- 800 chilling hours for successful fruiting.

Uses
It is a vigorous, climbing deciduous fruit wine. Ripe fruits have refreshing, delicate flavor, pleasant aroma and high nutritive and medicinal value. It is widely known for its high ascorbic acid. It is mostly use as fresh or combine with other fruits in salad and dessert.

Propagation
It is propagated through hard wood cutting which are taken in the month of Jan – Feb after treating with 4000 ppm IBA solution for 2 – 3 months. It is also propagated through seeds which are extracted from well ripened fruit, stratified at 3 – 4 C for 40 days and sown in growing media. The seedlings are use as rootstock and tongue grafting is done in the month of February.

Planting
The plants should be planted during early winter to early spring in a pit of 1m x 1m x 1m dimensions at 6m x 4m distance. Before planting 40 kg FYM and 45 g DAP should be mixed into the soil per pit Kiwi orchard should be oriented in north south direction for maximum light distribution.

Training and Pruning
Generally T-bar trellis, which can support 3-5 wires on iron pole is required to train the kiwi fruit vine. The laterals branches, two in opposite direction are allowed when it reach a height of 5.5 ft. The vine bears on 3 – 12 buds on currant season growth. Only the canes from the previous season’s growth bear fruit. Hence the balance must be maintain between growth and fruiting. Male plants should be pruned after flowering and the flowering shoots should be cut back to a new growth as close to base as possible.

Full dose of FYM, DAP, MOP and half dose of urea should be applied during Jan – Feb and remaining half dose of urea should be apply in the month of May.

Pollination
Kiwi is dioecious plant and requires essentially planting of both male and female varieties in a single block. Male and female plant should be planted in the ratio of 1:8 for adequate pollination. Placement of 9 bee hives/ha in small groups of 3-4 colonies, after opening of 10-20% flower is sufficient for getting good crop.

Harvesting
Generally fruit harvesting id done during November. The fruits when contain about 6.20 brix TSS is consider ready for harvesting. Being a climacteric fruit, it takes 10 – 15 days to be ripened at room temperature after harvesting.
