It thrives well in deep, loose and well aerated soil with a pH of 5.5-6.2 devoid of any hard pan of calcium carbonate in the rooting zone upto 150cms. High water table and poor drainage is injurious to the plant which causes drying of roots and nutritional imbalance.

Climate Requirement
It is a sub-tropical fruit crop cannot withstand cold period. Temperature of -2˚C to 0˚C is injurious to the citrus. It grows upto an altitude of 200-1500m amsl. Hot air and excessive heat during flowering and fruit setting cause fruit drop and sun burning.

Uses
Khasi Mandarin (Cirus reticulata), a delicious group of mandarin. It has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effect on the body. And is also used as an herbal medicine.

Propagation and rootstock
Most of the citrus crops are propagated by T-budding. The fresh seeds of the rootstock are sown in the beds of 2cm x 10cm distance and 1cm deep which germinates after 3 weeks after sowing. After attaining the height of 15cm the seedlings should be transferred to the nursery where budding operations are being performed. Citrus plants can be budded during March-April or August-September.
Mainly propagated by seeds or 'T’ budding/shield budding.
Seed production:
Freshly extracted seeds should be mixed with sand or ash and should be shown immediately in raised bed (1m width) and polybags prepared with 2 parts of soil+1 part FYM+1 part of forest soil. Germination takes place within 3-4 weeks. Only the nucellar seedlings are allowed to grow which has uniform height.
Budding:
T-budding most commonly preferred method. Optimum temperature is February-March or July-August with Khasi mandarin as scion and Rangpur lime or Rough lemon as rootstock.

Planting
Pit size
50cm x 50cm x 50cm (May)
Spacing
6 x 6m
Filling up of pits
The pits are allowed to wither for 1month
Then filled with mixture of top soil, 15-20kg FYM and 100g urea, 100g MOP and 300g SSP and forest soil mixture.
Planting time
June-August or February-March.

Manures
During second year onwards 5kg FYM/tree needed to be applied and subsequently for 5yrs. And at 6th year dosed should be increased to 25kg FYM/tree.
Need based macro-micro nutrients can be applied as per requirement.

Intercropping
French bean and other leguminous crops can be grown at its pre-bearing stage (1-5years)
×
Pruning
• Pruning of non-bearing trees can be done at any time of the year. But for bearing trees the best time is after harvesting.
• During the 1st year, all the branches grown within 50cm from the ground level should be removed leaving about a half meter of clean, straight stem with 4-5 well placed branches.
• All undesirable branches and water sprouts should be pruned once in a month on 1st year.
• In bearing trees water sprouts, criss-cross, dead and disease branches should be pruned once or twice a year.
×
Irrigation
Mandarin should be watered at 10-15 days intervals in winter and 5-7 days in summer.
×
Weeding
Weeds are the major problem in Khasi Mandarin. Spray pre-emergence herbicides like Diuron (5kg/ha) or post emergence herbicides like Atrazine 5-6kg/ha or Glyphosate (5litre/ha).
×
Fruit drop and its control
1. Hormonal imbalance= spraying 2,4D 10ppm at pea stage of fruit.
2. Fruit sucking moth=Putting 20-30 nos./ha poison bait traps(mixing fruit juice, sugar @ 200gm and malathion @ 20gm or diazinon @ 50ml) at different locations. Plano fix @ 1ml/5litre of water in March-April or August-September
×
Harvesting
Harvesting period= November-February.
×
Weeding
An average yield of about 600 fruits per tree is recorded.
